Noted American Calligrapher, Paul Herrera, will return to Deep River, ON to offer a unique all day workshop for those interested in improving their day-to-day penmanship and also learning a bit about broad pen calligraphy. Herrera, former apprentice to the world renown calligrapher, the late Father Edward Catich, has completed the final manuscript left unfinished by Catich on this unique Calligraphic Handwriting style, Petrarch, and is preparing to publish the book by the end of 2014. He is conducting a series of workshops on this handwriting style in North America through 2015. Herrera, Chairman of the Board of Directors for The Art Legacy League in the United States, has been teaching in regional, national, and international calligraphy forums for over thirty years. He came to Deep River in 2012 to give a lecture on Catich for the first Art on the Lawn Lecture Series.
Petrarch is a very unique alphabet with stroke sequences and direction based on those used in the formal Imperial Roman Alphabet, as represented in the Trajan Column Inscription in Rome, the finest example of Imperial Inscription writing available to present day students of letter arts. Catich designed this rounded rhomboidal alphabet so that it could be used both in broad pen calligraphy and adapted to a very legible monoline, everyday pencil and pen writing style. Herrera and other instructors that teach with him through The Art Legacy League teaching division, The Catfish Letter Arts School, including Deep River’s own Nancy Trottier, have discovered that there is a renewed interest in improving personal penmanship by people of all ages in this digital world.
This all day intensive workshop will provide participants with the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of Petrarch, both for monoline everyday applications and also for use of the calligraphic cartridge pen for broad pen calligraphy in writing the alphabet.
The workshop, A Calligraphic Handwriting Called Petrarch, will be offered Tuesday September 16th, from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at St. Barnabas Anglican Church, 80 Glendale Avenue, Deep River, ON. The cost for the workshop is $50 per person with a $15 materials fee. Participants should bring a sack lunch, but morning and afternoon tea breaks will be provided.
